Tribute to Martin Fieldhouse, 1936 - 2026

I will remember Martin as a kind and generous employer, who once kept me on the phone for so long, covering a very wide range of interesting but non-work related topics, that he told me to count it as work time! I am sorry I could not attend today in person but it was a beautiful service and my thoughts are with you all. Rest in peace Martin

Remembering the awe I felt whenever conversing with Martin. Though I did not always understand, he was an inspiration to me.

Martin was a remarkable man and made a signficant contribution to the field of Operational Research. He is remembered with fondness by the staff and members of the OR Society.

Martin was so much more than my boss for nearly 50 years. He was a good friend and mentor. He possessed a brilliant mind, with a passion for solving a diverse range of problems using logic and mathematical techniques. Shortly before his death he phoned me to discuss artificial intelligence and quantum computing. A man of faith, shown in his honest, fair and caring treatment of staff and their families. We will miss you Martin, and your abundant stories of times past.

I haven't known Martin for many years but what stands out was he was a gent, a man of authenticity, of knowledge and experience and most of all an energy to do things in the world despite negative forces. He will be sorely missed. Peter, Frenchay Chapel

Martin asked me if I'd like to came and play the Organ in Bridgwater Unitarian chapel, I wasn't very good and I struggled a lot. More often then not I was either in front or far behind the singing. That was about 20 yrs ago, Martin's encouragement was wonderful. I was very proud to call YOU MY FRIEND. Many happy memories!! Thank-you Martin.

I am I and you are you, whatever we were to each other that we still are. Speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? Life means all that it ever meant, it is the same as it ever was.
